Reading Acquisition Difficulties

As we turn our attention to children who have had difficulty learning to read, we focus first on those issues that share three properties. These are issues that have been prominent in the study of poor reading in children (e.g., Share & Stanovich, 1995b), can be considered from the perspective of dual-route theory, and have parallels in the literature on proximal causes of acquired dyslexia presented in chapter 4. Later in this chapter, we review more distal causes of reading acquisition failure and speculate about how the process of reading acquisition might go awry.
