Introduction

The communities of reading researchers who have studied different populations have each developed certain methodological biases. Each of the literatures we have reviewed in chapters 3 through 7 has been shaped by its own intrinsic constraints and the resources to which researchers working in that area have had access. In this book, we have drawn on many different kinds of research, pointing out the strengths and limitations of each approach and emphasizing their complementarity.
