Proximal and Distal Causes of Individual Differences in Reading

T he purpose of this chapter is to create a logical framework for our subse-quent consideration of the disparate literatures about three groups of atypical readers. Because many problems in the study of individual differences in reading are rooted in lack of precision in the way such individual differences have been defined and studied, we begin by setting forth a definition that we think is widely accepted, but has implications that have not always been considered. Throughout this volume, we make certain fundamental assumptions about what reading is.
