ABSTRACT

This dialogue on the nature of literature is a fragment of a longer interview conducted on June 20, 1 975 with Roger-Pol Droit. It took place several months after the publication of Surveiller et punir (February 1975) and one year prior to the publication of La Volonté de savoir (December 1 976). Roger Pol-Droit and Michel Foucault had decided to collaborate on a book of interviews — an on-going dialogue — that would further develop some of Foucault’s theoretical concepts and address other issues left unexplored in his previously published work. The project, however, was never completed. The following represents a small portion of the “sixth” tape that was subsequently edited by Roger-Pol Droit and published for the first time in Le Monde, September 16, 1986. The translation is by Alan Sheridan.
