Towards an Ontology of the Moving Image

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to address the longstanding question: "What is cinema?" However, as my title indicates, in the course of my attempt to answer this question, I shall reorient the inquiry somewhat, and, for reasons that will soon emerge, I will ultimately try to approximate an answer to the related but different question: "What is the nature of the moving image?"
