ABSTRACT

The United Kingdom has been applauded by some American observers for its national effort to establish occupational standards and national vocational qualifications. Part of that effort has been the development of generic Occupational Standards for Managers. In addition the Department of Employment has assisted a number of projects including the School Management Standards project and the Oxford National Educational Assessment Centre. The Department of Education and Science (now the Department for Education) funded the first evaluation of the Oxford project and has also funded research work on values and a number of profiling projects which have included some use of competence based frameworks. The School Management Task Force also examined and tested the use of self study materials for management development in schools.
