ABSTRACT

Long-term planning will be discussed in this chapter from several, interrelated perspectives:

tional schools; and • characteristics of successful strategic planning in schools.

In the course of the discussion set out in this chapter certain problems and conditions are identified which arise sui generis in international schools, and which have a bearing on the planning issue. The status of the practice of planning in schools is discussed, particularly as it applies to international schools. Reasons are suggested for why effective planning is difficult to accomplish in international schools, and suggestions are made for dealing with those difficulties. The planning function is reviewed: planning as an active, dynamic process of decision-making, as the central management function and tool, as comprehensive in content and impact, as an inclusive process, and as the sine qua non of successful schools.
