ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the anatomy and physiology of the sensory-motor system, which I will take to include muscle tissue, the spinal cord, the cerebellum, the basal ganglia, and the sensory and motor areas of the cerebral cortex. The structure of muscle tissue is first described, followed by a brief description of the spinal cord and reflex arcs. A description of muscle action follows, showing that both the static and dynamic properties are measured by the sensory receptors and controlled by the motor system. The various processing stations along the pathways of motor control are described in the remainder of the chapter.
