Black Identity: Rediscovering the Distinction Between Personal Identity and Reference Group Orientation

Perhaps as many as 200 investigations have been conducted on black (and white) identity development in children and adults. The first task one confronts when attempting to review this literature is a meaningful system to reduce the data. Such a system reveals the methodological issues and hypothetical constructs that are stressed in describing, classifying, and analyzing each study.
