ABSTRACT
In the European Union (EU), buildings consume 40% of the total energy produced. Of this amount, 69% is used for heating and cooling systems as well as for domestic hot water. The EU has issued a series of directives the objectives of which are to enhance energy efficiency in buildings and to foment the use of renewable energies.
