A second immediate implication is that given our current set of diagnostics, we cannot know with certainty whether a given set of stimuli possesses emergent features. This means that the search for formons must proceed with caution. It might be tempting to conclude, for example, that the misoriented parentheses of Fig. 3.3 do not configure, but in reality we have no way of knowing that for sure at this time.
