ABSTRACT

In this chapter we are concerned with the prediction of individual performance in situations requiring people to take action in response to the information in rapidly changing visual-spatial displays. The research attempts to unite two streams of research activity in psychology. One is the study of individual differences in elementary information-processing capabilities and the other is performance on complex cognitive tasks. Most previous research on these two topics can be looked on as an attempt to understand how a person’s ability to perform elementary information-processing activities, such as retrieving a word meaning from memory, determines performance on complex, more intellectual tasks, such as those used in a typical intelligence test.
