This might be infringed when modifications or repairs are made to a patented product. In United Wire v Screen Repair Services (2000) Lord Hoffman said that purchasers of patented products should be able to repair and modify products. Generally though, a repairer should not repair the ‘essential component’ or ‘essential element’ of a product. This remains uncertain as to precise scope.
