ABSTRACT

Question asking in computer use has been a relatively ignored topic of study. The research that has been conducted has been primarily limited to the domain of information retrieval from databases. Limited research on question answering has also been performed in the area of expert systems (Lang, Graesser, & Hemphill, 1990). However, there are many aspects of computer usage in which question asking could play a major role, such as “help” systems, training, and accessing information from large information systems. If users are going to obtain information that is important to them, they must be able to ask the computer questions and receive informative answers to these questions.
