ABSTRACT

As suggested by the title of this chapter, I begin by sketching how my collaborators and I changed the orientation of our child language studies. In addition, this chapter is concerned with some of the ways children change their perspective on language, focusing on different aspects at different ages or in different contexts of verbal activity. Finally, I indulge in some theoretical speculations concerning linguistic structure and Piaget's operatory logic.
