ABSTRACT

Conclusion, as in the title of this chapter, trades on two meanings. In the traditional sense, we bring the book to an end exercising our editorial prerogative one last time. We selectively and interpretively sum up the ideas offered by our colleagues in the preceding chapters. In the other sense, we use this review as a forum within which to judge whether Piaget's ideags could have a continuing and constructive influence on developmental theory and research. Any who have arrived at this point by reading this volume from the beginning must share our conclusion that the scholars contributing to this work reveal the ongoing vitality of Piaget's theory and less directly his research. As confident as we are in concluding that Piaget's influence will not end, it is equally clear that our conclusion is not shared by some developmentalists.
