ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a statistical profile of where students with emotional or behavioral disorders are placed. It describes the characteristics of students with emotional or behavioral disorders who have been placed in such facilities. Students with emotional or behavioral disorders receive educational services in a variety of settings, as do students with other disabilities. The placement patterns for students reported with emotional or behavioral disorders are quite different from those for special education students in general. Disproportionate representation of students with emotional or behavioral disorders among all those placed in separate facilities was also found in a survey of such facilities conducted during the 198––89 school year. The chapter utilizes information from the 1988–89 survey of separate facilities to describe characteristics and experiences of students with emotional or behavioral disorders who are placed in separate day and residential facilities.
