ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the research and professional literatures to determine the location and nature of these sources, summarize their content, describe areas of agreement and disagreement about placement options, and suggest areas of needed investigation. According to the Institute of Medicine, children and families often require a combination of interventions such as behavioral and psychological therapies, family therapy, special education, and medication, and there is a “growing body of evidence” to support “the effectiveness of many treatments used in clinical care. The most frequently discussed issue was the role or efficacy of specific types of placement, usually residential or hospital placement. G. Voineskos suggested that advocates have oversold the community-based system of care because too often clients’ release to a community is prompted by political pressure and economics rather than as a treatment plan, and funds saved are not used for development in the community.
