ABSTRACT

Research has traditionally linked emotional processing to the limbic system and to other subcortical structures. In the past two decades, components of emotional processing (e.g., perception, expression) have also been attributed to neocortical structures. Although most of the literature supports right hemisphere specialization for emotional processing, some investigations suggest right hemisphere specialization for negative/unpleasant emotions and left hemisphere specialization for positive/pleasant emotions. Other investigations suggest an interaction between hemispheric specialization and the particular component of emotion under study.
