ABSTRACT

This chapter lays the cornerstone for the models we work with in this book. It builds the theoretical foundation for the work, introducing our major variables for metaemotion, parenting, the child’s regulatory physiology, the concept of emotion regulation as we use it, and the developmental outcomes we have studied. Because we have selected a social psychophysiological approach to studying families, we construct an “Emotion Regulation Theory” of emotion in families and its linkages to child peer social competence and other developmental outcomes.
