ABSTRACT

The influence of context on a particular phoneme is well documented. It is important to remember this interaction effect when transcribing phonemes in conversational speech. Coarticulation is the influence of the target phoneme on surrounding phonemes. This chapter looks at three particular consonants (/ɹ/, /l/, /Ŋ/) that are strongly influenced by coarticulation. Although many consonants have unique qualities, these three warrant additional detail as explained here.
