ABSTRACT

The human face is a product of evolution that serves multiple functions. The face houses the organs for the major senses such as sight and smell and also transmits emotional states through nonverbal expressions. The face conveys the individual’s demographic group, such as age and gender and serves as a primary clue for perceivers to recognize individuals from a distance. Most important for a Darwinian analysis, the face is a potent stimulus for social attraction and mating behavior.
