ABSTRACT
French people use a variety of styles in letters, ranging, as one would expect, from the chatty to the highly formal according to the situation. Writing letters to personal friends in French poses no special problems since the language used is close to that of everyday conversation. Problems arise for English speakers as they move across the spectrum of styles towards formal letters destined for complete or near strangers.
