ABSTRACT

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of The Math Forum's Problem(s) of the Week (PoW; https://forum.swarthmore.edu/pow/) on students' mathematical thinking, where mathematical thinking refers to habits of thinking common to mathematicians. Among these habits are the use of strategies and reflection in the process of working to understand numerical relationships and symbolic forms. In its developed form it refers to, and includes, the use of strategies and reflection as part of the process of problem-solving (Schoenfeld, 1992). Development of students' abilities to think mathematically has been found to require both ongoing work with a variety of problem types, and instruction that is systematically organized to facilitate strategy use and reflection (Lester, Garofalo, & Kroll, 1989).
