ABSTRACT
Arabic teaching has a long history in Britain and Ireland. The Sir Thomas Adams Chair of Arabic was established by the University of Cambridge as an adjunct to Theology in 1632, Sir Thomas Adams himself being the first incumbent. In Scotland, Arabic teaching at the University of Edinburgh goes back over 250 years.
