ABSTRACT

When students feel capable and connected, and contribute in the classroom, they acquire a sense of belonging, with feeling capable coming first (Albert, 1989; 1996). A classroom atmosphere where mistakes are viewed as learning opportunities encourages a sense of capability and boosts confidence. Connection is second; students must feel connected to their classmates and their teachers. Last, students must believe they are contributing to their worlds—the classroom and beyond. Community service and peer assistance present various opportunities through which students can contribute.
