ABSTRACT

In this chapter the particular position of ethnic minorities on the labour market will be dealt with, although major parts of this chapter, such as the research models described, may apply to other minority groups as well. The definition of ethnic minorities may involve many aspects such as biological, socio-economical, political and cultural ones, and a balanced definition would require discussion of both the terms “ethnic” as well as “minority”. Although it is recognized that a sound definition may be useful in other cases, it is not really needed from the perspective of this chapter. We prefer to deal with this definition issue pragmatically, so we will consider any group as an ethnic minority if it differs on variables such as nationality or race from the majority or autochthonous part of the population. Furthermore, this chapter concerns only those groups that arc in a disadvantageous position, or which may be treated differently because of characteristics such as nationality, language, race, etc.
