Many times the interpretation of the "meaning of symbols" is subject to overinterpretation and, of course, misinterpretation. Freud (11) emphasized these factors in the seventh chapter of Interpretation of Dreams in the discussion of the latent and manifest content of dreams and the distortions and transformations making the interpretations of symbols hazardous. In any attempt at hypothesizing the unconscious expression of any single symbol of a dream or a projective instrument such as a drawing, one must weigh the alternate and sometimes seemingly incompatible interpretations. What is more essential is that the observer be capable, in the frame of reference of his own background, training and skills, to consider the totality of the individual.
