The Origins and Spread of Agriculture

No other single change in human history can have had a greater effect upon the landscape than the domestication and global spread of plants and animals. The discovery of agriculture was an important developmental threshold since its associated economies provided the basis for the early stages of civilization. In this chapter we will review current knowledge of the origins of agriculture and its dispersion, in order to understand the variety of manipulated agroecosystems (see also Chapter 13) that have changed the face of the earth.
