ABSTRACT

Whether it is for reasons of health or for athletic performance, optimizing cardiovascular function is of fundamental importance to all clients. In this chapter we look at the strategies the body has to produce energy for movement and how they rely on the cardiovascular system to provide fuel and oxygen as well as remove waste products such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid. We will consider the different facets of cardiovascular performance, ranging from slow steady distance to highintensity interval training and discuss how they can be structured into a systematic programme of training for your client.
