ABSTRACT

For many years prior to its introduction to the health and fitness industry, the Swiss ball had been used by physicians for the rehabilitation of patients with orthopaedic and neural problems (Franklin, 2000). Only recently has its application been extended into use as a tool for strength and conditioning training. Unfortunately, the Swiss ball is in danger of becoming a fad like any other. It is often overused, badly taught and ultimately misunderstood. This chapter aims to clarify the science behind the Swiss ball in order to appreciate its many benefits and to provide a range of exercises that can immediately be taken away and used with your clients.
