A Brief Primer on Brief Therapy
Many people confuse brief therapy and managed care. They are not the same thing. Brief psychotherapy is one of the tools that managed care may employ. A sophisticated and evolved view of managed care regards brief therapy as only one of many system components used to achieve an overall reduction in the presence of emotional disorders among a defined population. Until such sophistication is more widespread, much of managed care will be provided in "carve-out" programs with limitations on length of treatment. Individual psychotherapy, rather than more integrated and system-wide interventions, will probably be the primary tool that managed care employs in the near future since this is the structure for service delivery currently in place in the private sector.
