Speculations on the Relationship between Soap Opera and Melodrama

This paper explores the relationship between melodrama and an increasingly popular area of Television Studies—soap opera. A cursory glance at recent literature on soap opera suggests a certain ambiguity about this relationship. Most frequently an identity between soap opera and melodrama is assumed, but the opposite may be the case — as when soap opera is discussed in the context of realism.
