ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book shows that the establishment of Confucius Institutes in US public universities has been one of the more significant changes in higher education in recent years. China’s accession to the World Trade Organization, moreover, as well as the openness to US investment and American philanthropy has also helped People’s Republic of China (PRC) to catalyze the three-way integration of the university, government, and business in new ways. While university administrators, drawing on Etzkowitz and Leydesdorff's model of the university-government-business helix, often see Confucius Institutes as new actors on the universal stage of global capitalism. Change advances through people’s attempts to apply established logic and practices, of diplomacy and exchange, to new financial and politically viable opportunities, such as are made possible through Confucius Institutes.
