ABSTRACT

Sport is undeniably an emotional experience; therefore, understanding the emotional expertise that a coach requires to optimise performance is essential. In recent years, it has been suggested that coaches with a high level of emotional intelligence (EI) will be more effective, be able to motivate and relate better to players and support staff, have improved problem solving and decision making capabilities and be able to resolve conflicts in the workplace. This chapter provides an overview of the theoretical foundation of EI and considers the importance and practical application of the ‘skill’ of EI in the field of sports coaching.
