ABSTRACT
In this chapter we begin presenting the theoretical framework within which we embed the wide variety of data analysis situations known as multidimensional scaling. In this chapter, we also present a detailed account of a new data theory, and in the next several chapters we present the axiomatic, algebraic, and geometric aspects of the models most commonly used in multidimensional scaling.
