PHYSICAL EXERCISE: A COMPONENT OF TREATMENT
Within the treatment program, exercise serves two purposes: first, as a way to help clients cope with stress and second, as an aid in controlling weight. With many of our clients, regardless of their other problems, if stress and tension are present and they are physically able we encourage them to begin an exercise program. We have found that exercise is a simple and effective means of stress reduction. The stress may be long term and chronic such as a demanding boss or situational such as an
argument with a spouse. Besides helping the client relax and lower her tension level, we have observed that a regular program of exercise helps alleviate depression.
