INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES

The treatment of some individuals with eating disorders may be complicated by additional psychiatric problems such as borderline personality disorders. The binge/purge pattern also may be occasionally present in schizophrenia. The treatment approaches discussed in this book are intended for individuals with bulimia uncomplicated by either borderline or schizophrenic systems. While the authors recognize the role of hospitalization in the recovery of many women, the thrust of this book is on outpatient management of bulimia. Even if hospitalization becomes necessary, topics covered in this book are relevant.
