ABSTRACT

Native American adolescents are at high risk for suicide attempts and completions. This chapter discusses Native American suicide trends; treatment issues such as intentionality, self-report measures, diagnostic protocols and the use of the DSM-III; treatment approaches such as client roles, psychoanalytical and existential foundations, family and systems therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy and group therapy; and, implications for future investigation. Practitioners who work with Native American adolescents will find the contents of this chapter pertinent and useful.
