ABSTRACT

Read the passage right through once and decide whether the speakers would use vous or tu:

il/ils and ellelelles identify nouns or noun phrases referred to or implied elsewhere in the discourse. They can identify both concrete and abstract nouns. Normally the gender and number of the pronoun are determined by the gender and number of the noun or noun phrase; but where the sex of a person conflicts with the grammatical gender of the noun, the pronoun may agree with the person’s sex: Elle est médecin - médecin is masculine, but if it refers to a woman doctor it is impossible to use il. Collective nouns (like gouvernement, groupe) are normally referred to by singular il or elle, and take singular verbs: Le groupe a décidé.
