ABSTRACT
The time has finally arrived for clinicians and researchers to join forces, for both have a great deal of knowledge to offer one another. Perceptual Adjustment Therapy incorporates theory from both in its clinical strategies. In this chapter we will look at some of the scientific underpinnings of P.A.T. In many workshops, the question is asked, “How many counselors have an understanding of state dependent learning or state dependent recall?” Usually fewer than 10% of the participants will acknowledge an understanding of the terms, yet this information is critical to understanding the nature of chemical dependency.
