ABSTRACT

Adler (Ansbacher & Ansbacher, 1956) noted that all lifestyles are adequate until life or other people present a challenge for which the individual is unprepared. At those times the lifestyle is tested , and the amount of social interest that is present is displayed. This section deals with a variety of conditions listed in DSM-IV that can be summarized according to one overriding dynamic: The lifestyles of individuals with these conditions generally have been sufficient to meet the tasks of life until an event or series of events occurs that severely taxes individuals, and their dysfunctional patterns come to the attention of others (be it law enforcement personnel, employers, or spouses).
