ABSTRACT

Raywid (1993) highlighted six common attributes of healthy and vital school communities: respect, caring, inclusiveness, trust, empowerment, and commitment. Communication is open, participation is widespread, teamwork is prevalent, and diversity is incorporated. Members share a vision for the future of the school, a common sense of purpose, and a common set of values. Trust and respect as well as recognition of efforts and accomplishments are important ethos. A strong sense of community facilitates instructional efforts and enhances student and staff well-being.
