Our Western tendency has been to believe that understanding follows technique; if we get the right technique, then we can penetrate the riddle of the patient. . .. The existential approach holds the exact oppositenamely, that technique follows understanding. The central task and responsibility of the therapist is to seek to understand the patient as a being and as a being in his world . ... This does not derogate disciplined technique. It rather puts it into perspective.
