ABSTRACT
Every system from a cell to a planet uses energy and cycles material, taking in matter as nutrient, using it, and releasing it as waste. In the biosphere, waste from one organism becomes food for another. For a system to be sustainable, the rate at which waste is released can be no greater than the rate at which it can be processed, recycled, or absorbed.
