– Circles and Ellipses

Circles and ellipses represent a particular challenge for beginners. It’s hard to draw them with any kind of precision, and unfortunately even the tiniest of mistakes shout from the page. While it may be tempting to rely on ellipse guides, they can be expensive and are sometimes limiting since they don’t come in very large sizes. They also don’t come in every size. As mentioned earlier, they can also make your work look a little mechanical. It’s one thing if that’s the approach for your entire picture, but if your image is drawn in an expressive and informal way while your ellipses remain mechanical and precise, your picture will be inconsistent. It ultimately makes sense to buckle down and learn how to draw them.
