ABSTRACT

The liquefaction of coal, viz, converting coal into liquid fuels which can substitute petroleum products is generally referred to as Coal-to-liquids (CTL) process. These liquid fuels (also called synthetic fuels) are accomplished using three basic approaches: pyrolysis, direct coal liquefaction (DCL) and indirect coal liquefaction (ICL) (Bridgwater & Anders 1994), of which the latter two are in practice. The syntheticic fuels can be prepared almost identical to conventional petroleum fuels in their properties.
