ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the nature and origins of current alcohol educational efforts, details conflicting orientations on how best to reduce alcohol abuse, reports the empirical evidence of the effectiveness of differing approaches to alcohol education, discusses characteristics of effective programming, describes other curricular issues, and provides additional observations on enhancing effectiveness. CURRENT ALCOHOL EDUCATION Current alcohol education programs in North America and many other parts of the world are a product of two major influences: the temperance education movement and the drug education movement. Both arose out of a concern for the damage to youth that could occur from substance abuse.
