ABSTRACT
This chapter addresses the failure of the theory of reasoned action to give an adequate account of behaviour change, with particular reference to HIV-related behaviour. Our critique of the theory of reasoned action derives from a social constructionist standpoint and, thus, our analysis of the theory's limitations derives from a position outside the theory. Our argument is that the theory is bound to fail because it ignores the essentially social nature of human action, in this case, sexual conduct.
