ABSTRACT
The Southern Alps of New Zealand and the southern Andes are the southern hemisphere equivalents of Norway and the Western Cordillera of North America. In both of the southern regions, mountain ranges face snow-bearing westerly winds; the Southern Alps standing athwart the Roaring Forties, the Andes of southern Chile projecting into the Furious Fifties.
